Cippolina, Seals, & Sarno play San Francisco

San Francisco, CA - Former Huey Lewis & The News bassist, Mario Cippolina, and Jerry Garcia Band organist, Melvin Seals, joined Icehouse recording artist Tony Sarno for two San Francisco dates. Sponsored by the Bose Corporation, the group performed at The Portrero Hill Neighborhood House, and The Connnecticut Yankee, using the new sound system developed by Bose. The revolutionary sound system allows the audience to hear the same sound the performing musicians on stage are hearing. There was no sound operator, as the musicians controlled the sound they were creating for themselves, the audience, and fellow bandmembers. Rounding out the group was Oakland drummer Dante Bradford. The musicians had never played together before these gigs, and with only one rehearsal, the band achieved a level of music rivaling many established bands. Sarno attributes this to the obvious chemistry between the three veterans and the rookie drummer, but also to the fact that each musician could hear each other clearly.

The album features new songs written by Tony, a song co-written by Fred Koller (who wrote Jeff Healy's Angel Eyes with John Hiatt) and covers of Hendrix' Voodoo Chile, Janis' Piece of My Heart, and The Beatles' Don't let me down. Where Tony's first album featured new songs and covers of classic blues songs, this explores his rock roots with covers of some classic rock songs. There's also a blues version of America, The Beautiful dedicated to Tony's Uncle, who died in World War II. As usual, there's cool electric, acoustic, and slide guitar, and unique vocals on this CD. B-3 player extraordinaire Don E. Williamson plays great organ and piano; Rick Donley plays killer drums and percussion; Keith Christopher is wonderful as usual on bass, along with Doug Corbin and Chris Hopkins. There is also the great bassist Bob Babbitt on Livin for the rider. (Bob played on many of the hit songs released on Motown in the late 60's/early 70's. Check out the website www.allmusic.com and see for yourself); Lisa Silver, Vicki Hampton, and Cindy Walker provided some amazing background vocals and new addition Mike "Lefty" Hall played some very cool harp. Jason Hall recorded the basic tracks and some overdubs, and Voytek Kochanek did overdubs and mixed the album. George Tutko lend his great skills on some last minute remixing, and the whole thing was mastered by the incredible Rodney Mills.
